How the PDF Object Catalog Merging Pipeline Functions
Technical breakdown of cross-reference tables, indirect objects, and font dictionary deduplication
Merging PDF files is far more sophisticated than simply concatenating binary data. In the ISO 32000 standard, every PDF contains an internal cross-reference (/XRef) table and a root catalog dictionary (/Root) that maps page nodes, resource dictionaries, and interactive annotations.
When you merge files using PDF Converter Lab, our engine reads the object tables of each source document, re-indexes object identifier numbers to prevent ID collisions, unites the page trees into a single hierarchal /Pages dictionary, and generates a clean, single-pass cross-reference table. Common font descriptors are deduplicated to minimize the final file size.
