The Cryptographic Architecture of PDF Security and AES Encryption
Understanding encryption dictionaries, owner vs user passwords, and permission flags.
1.How PDF Encryption Works: ISO 32000-1 Standards
PDF security relies on an Encryption Dictionary (/Encrypt) stored in the trailer of the document. This dictionary dictates the encryption filter (Standard), the revision number (R=5 or R=6 for modern AES-256), the encryption key length (256 bits), and permission bitmask flags (P key).
When you apply a password with PDF Converter Lab, the engine generates an encryption key using cryptographic salt and hash algorithms (SHA-256 / PBKDF2). All stream data and string objects within the PDF are encrypted using AES-256 in CBC mode with an initialization vector (IV), ensuring that unauthorized inspection of the binary stream reveals nothing but pseudorandom ciphertext.
